Virginia C. Sulzberger

"For her outstanding leadership and contributions to the administrative, educational and technical activities of the IEEE Power Engineering Society"

Virginia C. Sulzberger's involvement with the Power Engineering Society began in 1969 with memberships on the Power System Engineering Committee and its Application of Probability Methods Subcommittee.  She joined the Energy Development Subcommittee of the Power Generation Committee in 1974, becoming Secretary in 1976, Vice Chair in 1978, and Chair from 1980 until 1982.  She continued her involvement in the subcommittee until 1988.  Concurrently, she served as a member of the Power Generation Committee.  Presently, the Energy Development and Power Generation Committee lists her as an Honorary Member.

Virginia has been actively involved in the governance of the Society, serving on the Governing Board for twelve years.  For three years - from 1986 to 1988 - she served as a  Member-At-Large.  She then chaired the Constitution & bylaws Committee from 1989 to 1993.  She was constantly
vigilant in ensuring the Board was following the guiding rules and principles of the Society as specified in the Constitution and Bylaws. Finally, she applied her management and analytical skills in serving PEC as
Treasurer from 1994 to 1997.

Virginia Sulzberger has also chaired the PEC Finance Committee, served on the PEC Executive Committee, the PES Editorial Board, and the Computer Applications in Power Magazine Editorial Board.

Virginia joined the IEEE in 1963 as a Member, became a Senior Member in 1976, and was elected a Fellow in 1990.  She has also been active in CIGRE (the International Conference on Large High Voltage Electric Systems) serving as a vice president of the US National Committee.

Virginia's electrical engineering career began at Public Service Electric & Gas Company, where she held various engineering and management positions, including Manager of Transmission Planning and Manager of Advanced System Planning.  She then joined Exxon Enterprises as a Senior Planning Advisor. She moved to the North American Electric Reliability Council (NERC) in 1985
and presently holds the position of Director of Engineering.  She earned BSEE and MSEE degrees from the New Jersey Institute of Technology.  She is a member of Eta Kappa Nu and Tau Beta Pi.
