Chapter 3 (2)

Spectroscopic Methods (II)

Important Topics

Infrared spectrometry and FTIR
Atomic absorption spectrometry
Inductively coupled plasma emission spectrometry

Important Skills

Understand and be able to explain how FTIR works and what its advantages are over dispersion instrumentation
Understand the principles of AAS and its instrumentation
Understand the difference between atomic and molecular spectroscopy
Be able to perform the calculations involved in calibration and sample determination for spectroscopic analyses (including standard addition methods)

Discussion question:

Search the web for an interesting site which uses some sort of spectroscopic method to monitor an environmentally interesting system. If you prefer, you can report briefly on a similar topic which you have read about recently. Post what you find on the class bulletin board.
