· The course should begin with the earliest civilizations and end with the Renaissance.

· There must be coverage of the contributions of ancient Greece and Rome; an ancient Greek play must be taught.

· There must be an encounter with major religious texts.

· There must be an encounter with major philosophical texts.

· Some work from the Middle Ages must be examined.

· A Renaissance drama is to be taught.

· Appropriate texts will be considered within the tradition of orality-literacy.

Hum 211 - The Pre-Modern World (3-0-3 )
Prerequisite: HSS 101. Compares and contrasts world cultures from early historical time through the Renaissance, with special regard to the formation of Western civilization and traditions, and with special consideration of architecture, art, drama, literature, music, philosophy, and religion, analyzed within historical contexts. Analyses shed light on differing forms of material culture, belief systems, aesthetic norms, and artistic productions to develop an understanding of ancient, medieval and Renaissance world views. This course satisfies three credits of the GUR in Cultural History.
