Parabolic Shear

Granular System

Velocity Profile

Granular system is being sheared with a cosine velocity profile. We study both cohesive and dry system. The cohesion between particles is caused by a small amount of liquid in the system. Only particles that come into a contact form cohesive bridge and experience cohesive force. In our current model, cohesive force depends on the distance between interacting particles and scales as F~1/s2; if the distance between the interacting particles is large enough, cohesive bridge breaks. One of our goals is to characterize the system by pressure; during the shear, we observe a hysteresis in the pressure as a function of the shear angle. We analyze the energy loss and the influence of the outer pressure applied on the system top and bottom wall, find the difference between the energy loss of cohesive and dry system and compare the results with those obtained in the experiments (#paper_in_progress)
