"I remember saying, ‘I don’t know if I can live here,’ " Maureen Kanka told those gathered to dedicate the little floral garden.
The suggestion for the Park had begun in late August of 1994. The Rotary Club of Hamilton-Washington, New Jersey, offered to purchase the house where Megan Kanka was murdered and to replace the house with a public park. The Rotary Club raised $120,000 in cash, and local businesses donated both funding and services.
The dedication was held on September 20, 1995.
Jeff Sagnip
Hollendonner wrote of that day, "When the dedication was over, and the
final camera was shut off and the last of the residents and visitors faded
away to their daily lives, only the children of Barbara Lee Drive remained
at Megan’s Place. Meg Tyson, 11, who once played hopscotch with Megan at
their school playground and along the sidewalks of the neighborhood, yesterday
sat on the grass quietly with several friends. ‘Megan would have been very
happy here,’ Tyson said. ' She’d like the flowers and the hopscotch. I
think she’s happy now.' "
