ANDREW SOHN

Andrew Sohn received a B.S. in Electrical Engineering, an M.S. in Computer Engineering, and a Ph.D. in Computer Engineering, all from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, California.

Professor Sohn joined NJIT as a tenure- track Assistant Professor in 1991 and was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in 1997. His areas of teaching include undergraduate and graduate courses in the Linux operating system kernel, computer architecture, high performance computing, and intensive programming. His research interests are in datacenter technologies, Linux kernel development, and big data/graph. In 1999, he led a team that successfully obtained a National Science Foundation (NSF) Major Research Instrumentation Grant, the second in NJIT history.

In addition to serving as an NSF fellow. Professor Sohn has been a fellow at the Center of Excellence in Computer Science of the Electrotechnical Laboratory, the national laboratory of japan for electrical engineering and computer science. His efforts to promote international collaboration between the U.S. and japan were recognized at a reception hosted by then-U.S. ambassador Thomas Foley, former Speaker of the House, at the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo.

In the 1990s, Professor Sohn was a NASA joint Venture faculty fellow at the Advanced Supercomputing Division of the NASA Ames Research Center, Moffett Field and the Research Institute for Advanced Computer Science in Mountain View, California. For his efforts. Professor Sohn earned a NASA Education Associate Pioneer Certificate.

Professor Sohn was twice an invited scientist at the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Over the course of his career. Professor Sohn has published numerous scientific papers in flagship conference proceedings and journals, including ACM/IEEE Supercomputing and IEEE Transactions.

In addition to his academic career. Professor Sohn founded and ran a Silicon Valley-based software company that developed an elastic, on-demand computing infrastructure for enterprise companies. His early career included work at IBM in Tucson, Arizona and the Aerospace Corporation in El Segundo, California as well.

The students who have received Ph.D.s under Professor Sohn's supervision became active contributors in both academia and leading technology companies globally. His service activities at NjIT include serving on the Faculty Senate and on executive search committees for leadership positions at the university.
