In Figs. 1(a) to 1(d) John and Jorge are show weighing YBCO starting materials, grinding the combined powders and initiating the solid state reaction process by placing the sample in a high temperature furnace.

Fig. 3.   Observation of levitation of a magnet above a superconductor (at temperature below the critical temperature)- the Meissner Effect.  The grey dot is the magnet. The frost covered black disk below it is the superconductor (YBCO).  In addition to this test, x-ray diffraction and Raman scattering measurements were used to determine the chemical composition and properties of the reacted powder.

 

 

 


  Group 2

Students from group 2 (Upward Bound Program) presenting research on the basic physics, chemical composition, preparation and applications of high temperature superconductors.  The presentation ends with a  Meissner effect demonstration of superconductivity in the YBCO sample which they prepared.
