Spring 2007 - OPSE  310/ IT 320

Virtual Instrumentation, 3 credits

Prerequisites:  A 3 credit 100 Level Computer Science programming course (C, C++, Java, Fortran, etc.).

Narrative Description:

This course will cover the basics of virtual instrumentation including use of IEEE GPIB, RS232, and Data Acquisition interfaces. The students will learn how to interface a computer to various instruments for data acquisition and instrument control. The software platform will be state-of-the-art software such as National Instrument’s LABVIEW software. The emphasis is not on the electronic aspects of the IEEE GPIB or RS232 interfaces but rather on the practical aspects of interfacing a computer to various instruments.

Purpose of the Course:

The OPSE 310/IT320  course utilizes National Instruments Labview software. Through the course work, students learn how "virtual instrument" programs are written and how the programs are developed for experimental/ process control of instruments. The skill of data acquisition/ virtual instrumentation is a vital skill required for many workforce applications.

For whom is the course intended? All science and engineering majors including CIS, Physics, BME, Biology, EE, CoE, Chem, Chem Eng., Mech. Eng., Civil Eng. Etc.
