Located in the Department of Chemistry and Environmental Science at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), and run by Professor Somenath Mitra, our activities are in Analytical Chemistry, Nanotechnology and Smart Active Coatings. In analytical chemistry we are focused on developing instrumentation for on-line process analysis, environmental monitoring, field portable instruments and microfluidic devices. In nanotechnology we are working with nanoparticles particularly carbon nanotubes as an adsorbents, chromatography stationary phases, functionalization and polymer composites. The third activity funded by DOD has been in Smart Active Coatings with embedded sensing and color change.

Some of the research projects currently underway are:

Ë

Environmental and Process Monitoring
Development of gas injection membrane extraction (GIME) for measurement of volatile organic compounds in water.
Microtrap G.C. for Continuous On-Line Monitoring.
Continuous monitoring of non-methane organic carbon (C-NMOC) in air emissions.
Microtrap mass spectrometry (MTMS) for monitoring air emissions.
MEMS Microconcentrator
