Grades will be made available in moodle later today.

nominal grades and nothing else. The grade for PrP should be in the feedback
section.
Room GITC4324 for Assistant office hours (Wed and Thu 2-3pm re PrP).
Be reminded, there is a class on Wed night (i.e. tomorrow)

(04/30) PrP grading
Note that because late submission with a point-penalty was possible for PrP effective grading
could not start before this past Monday. As of now (4/30, 9:52am) grading is progressing and
definitely is NOT complete.
-
(04/23) Class on Reading Day (Wed 8 May)
Note that the last day of classes will be the 1st reading day i.e. Wed 8 May.
Tue 7 May is a Friday for NJIT (Good Friday replacement). The classroom is unavailable.
Thus we will use KUPF 210 on Wed 8 May for the missing, due to the snow closure, class.
Be also reminded that there would be no regular office hours on Tue 7 May (Friday schedule)
and no regular office hours on Wed 8 May either.

(04/23) Laptop Found
After class a student found a laptop in the classroom. It is not clear who misplaced it
(this or another class).
If you have a laptop missing, you may pick it up tomorrow Wed
during the morning office hours; some proof of ownership will be required though. Have your
ID with you. Around 12:45pm on Wed, I will surrender At 12:45 (Wed) I surrendered
the laptop to the information desk in the Campus Center. It will be logged there and can be picked
up there afterwards.

(04/23) PrP Draft
There is at least one 'submission' that has not officially been submitted. If it so intentionally,
ignore this email, otherwise act on this information.
-
(04/15) Returning graded Exam 2.5 on Tue 4/16
I am going to follow the reverse of the procedure i followed last time.
At 7:35 or so, Exam numbers 45-90 will be returned, and at 8:50 or so, Exam numbers 1-44.
No questions re the exam will be answered at that time other than clerical questions (eg why 5 plus 5
is 9 or 11 and not 10).
-
(04/15) Exam 2.5, PS 6, and Section C
Problem Set 6 has been posted.
The exam has been graded. Statistics are available in section C. Sample solutions will be
posted later this week.
Then everything that is to be posted in Section C will have been posted.
-
(04/02) PS 5 posted
-
(03/26) PS 5 delayed
The fifth problem set will be delayed one week due to the snow-related class cancellation.
-
(03/25) HW3 and Exam 2.5
I'll post HW3 one week ahead of time (and will be due also one week ahead of time).
HW3 has been posted and is due one week ahead of time i.e by next Tue April 2, before noon time.
This way Exam 2.5 will be scheduled for April 9. Note that Exam 2.5 will be 60 minutes
not the incorrectly posted 45 minutes available in a moodle announcemenet early in the semester that has
been corrected since then. In summary Exam 2.5 on April 9, 60mins, 155 points.
It will cover where we stopped at Exam 2 through what we will do on Apr 2; roughly this means
Subject 3, 5, and 6, and parts of Subject 7 covered before the break.
Following a short break class will
resume at 7:15pm that night, April 9.
-
(03/12) Emailing
Whenever you decide to send an email do not forget the guidelines of Handout 0.
There is a +cs610 to the email address of both the instructor and the TA. If you do not do so,
do not expect much of a response.
-
(03/12) Exam Grading
I will most likely return the exams tonight. At 7:35 exam numbers 1-45 will be returned.
At the end of class, the remaining exams will be returned. No questions will be answered.
Contact the instructor (graded problems 1-4) or the Assistant (graded problems 5-10),
during office hours or by email as specified in the previous item above.
Note the Syllabus section re pencils. Solutions will become available sometime after the break.
-
(03/12) PS4, and Exam 2 related and class tonight
A PS4 has been posted in Section C.
The exam has also been posted in Section C. It is still being graded.
Exam 2 solutions (summaries/outlines) will be provided after the exams are returned.
Because of the snow cancellation, I'll spend the class tonight doing introductory graph
theory on Graph Representations, tree traversals with applications to Web-Page Ranking
(Kleinberg and PageRank). This after we complete quicksort.
This way all material required for any one of the two options of PrP will have been covered prior to
the spring break.
(02/27) Exam 2 (aka midterm)
Read Handout 1 (Syllabus) for logistics. It will cover the material from
Subjects 1 through and including Subject 4.
For Chapters from the designated textbook
use the info in Section C.6 and associated with each subject.
-
(02/26) Cancelled Class
The first Reading Day, Wed May 8 will be a class per your decision on Feb 19.
-
(02/19) HW2 available in moodle, and PS3 posted
PS3 with solutions is already available in section C. Despite the class
cancellation i follow the original schedule. Some of the material in it
will be done after the midterm! (weather permitting). HW2 will get posted
later tonight or tomorrow morning.
-
(02/12) A note on PSes
Note that PSes offer solution summaries and not all possibilities for
a solution. Some arithmetic steps might be missing or not shown at all.
Sometimes a problem has one solution, as shown and given certain material
covered in class at the time of the PS's posting, and another solution if later
material is posted. For example, if you don't know 'merge-sort' the only
solution to a problem might be 'insertion-sort'.
Moreover some final steps might be missing. For example PS1.Problem 6 lists
in the solution the functions from asymptotically smallest to largest.
The problem statement on page 1 asks something else. But all ingredients of the answer are available to you.

(02/12 Weather Update
02/11@10:08)
Tue Feb 12 Weather-related
As it was sent out through an email from moodle, given NJIT's closure,
there are no office hours today, no class, and of course no Exam1.
There are various reports about the Tue weather.
At a minimum check NJIT's web-page and your NJIT email for developments.
The course web-page will follow those but with a delay.
If you commute and NJIT makes no announcements plan to be at NJIT
well ahead of 6pm.
And be reminded of Handout 1 (Syllabus) clause:
If Exam1 gets cancelled it becomes exam 2.5.
-
(02/10@16:05,02/07@17:12) Exam 1
The seating arrangements have been posted on
Thu Feb 7@17:12 in Section C1.b. Two duplicates entries were also
corrected on Sunday (exam number in the 30s and 40s.)
They are in a text file. Exam 1 is scheduled for Tue Feb 12
and it is closed everything! I alert about the mobile phone rule:
check Handout 1 (Syllabus).
The material covered in class during the first three weeks will be tested.
-
(02/05) KUPF 210: Yet another room change
As i alerted you last week, KUPFRIAN 210 is our lecture room effective
tonight Tue Feb 5. As a side note, do not forget to press the SUBMIT button
re HW1 and moodle. A moodle email will follow soon.
-
(02/02) Followup to moodle email re HW1
If Problem 1(a) reads ".. takes non-negative integer values from 0 up and
including 2**n -1", ignore the rest. Otherwise redownload HW1 to get the
statement of Problem 1(a) right.
An easy way to confirm you have the correct one is the following.
Run on a linux system an md5sum o1610s19.pdf and it should
report a checksum of 558a71cd5e5de57bf11cb7be48a6222a or
do a strings o1610s19.pdf | egrep 2019 and it should report
a /CreationDate (D:20190123103625-05'00')
-

-
(01/21 and 01/22) Room change
The Registrar's office has changed our classroom during this past weekend
from KUPF 210 into Weston Lecture Hall 1. Weston Lecture Hall 1 is also known as Room 160.
It is located on the ground floor and its entrance corridor is on the same level as MLK Blvd.
If you reach the Weston Building through the long ramp, use the staircase to move down two levels;
facing MLK Blvd move leftwards. There are two entrances to the room labeled officially Room 160
and with paper Weston Lect 1.
A moodle announcement has already been posted there and an email has
been sent out to all enrolled students. Under course information this update
is shown by striking out the out-of-date info and replacing it with the new
one. Note that the pdf and html version of the syllabus WILL NOT be updated and
still show the prior information; likewise for the hard copy of the syllabus
to be distributed in class. For the sake of caution double check
the URL https://uisnetpr01.njit.edu/courseschedule/ before heading
to class on Tuesday; it might get changed again!.
-
(01/17) Preliminary
An email to all currently enrolled students has been sent out through moodle. Moodle already
includes the Programming Project (also available through Section B below but differently dated).
More will be announced in class.
Section C material is being populated; the
password will be made available in the hardcopy version of Handout 0 attached to the syllabus
(Handout 1) around 6pm on Jan 22 at KUPF 210 (the designated classroom).
Room might (but i doubt) change; double check with the Registrar in advance.
