Standards Topics Presentation Assignment

Version 1.1 - 9/6 (added a note on references)

Note: This assignment is only for the graduate students enrolled in CIS 786-851.

Goal

To learn about the adoption and use of standards for the World Wide Web. Teams will provide information about these topics, which the class will then use as a basis for discussion.

Due Dates

by Saturday 9/8:

by the Monday (or Wednesday at the latest) of the week specified on schedule:

by Saturday 9/29:

Assignment

Everyone will present 3 standards during the semester. You will work in teams of two people.

Choosing Teams & Standards

In the "Topic Team Signup" conference on WebBoard, sign up for two of the topics for 9/19 through 10/31. Please sign up by Saturday 9/8. Once a team of two is formed, I will formalize it on the class schedule. You'll then be responsible for posting your presentation to WebBoard by the assigned dates.

You will need to form a team for your third topic by 10/13. I'm especially looking for people to propose additional topics we can discuss.

For choosing by 10/13:

Send me a List of Readings Early

For each topic I'd like you to find 2-3 readings (newspapers, trade press, academic research-related, etc.) that we can assign to the class. If possible they should be available on the Web. Otherwise we could scan it in for the class.

Please send me these readings as soon as possible, so I can put them on the class schedule for your week.

Presentation Format

On WebBoard, post your presentation. Text is fine. You don't need to do Powerpoint slides or anything like that. Rather it should be a clear and interesting description of your topic. Include as many examples as possible.

Also please include a more extensive reading list as a bibliography.

Currently I do not plan to ask for any written report, though I may change my mind for later topics in the semester.

Mentor the Discussion

During your week, please monitor the discussion of your topic. After Saturday, when people have posted comments, add some additional replies as necessary.

Private Team Conference

If you would like, I can set up a private conference on WebBoard for your team. Just let me know in an email message (bieber@njit.edu).

Important Note on References

Unfortunately, we must address plagiarism or copying work that other people have written in homework, reports, articles or on the Web. If you are going to use more than a few words from someone or somewhere else you must put it in quotation marks and you must cite it (say where you found it). If you paraphrase information from someone or somewhere else, you do not need to put it in quotation marks, but again you must cite it. Generally there is nothing wrong with incorporating other people's ideas to a limited degree, but you must make it clear when you are using and building upon other people's ideas. Plagiarism can result in failing the course and being put on probation. This unfortunately has happened to several students in the past in my classes.
