Getting Started with WebCT
Note: WebCT comes with extensive on-line help, so take
advantage of it if you are curious, stuck, or looking for a
particular feature!

Get a WebCT Account
Follow these steps if you do not have a WebCT account from a
previous class.
Go to http://webct.njit.edu/
and click on Find out what your WebCT/UCID login is or Find out how
to create a WebCT/UCID Login.
Creating a UCID is summarized below but you should follow the
links on the WebCT page to ensure you are following the latest
procedure.
- Go to
http://newaccount.njit.edu/
and click on the Create a new account on "UCID/Campus
Directory/Mailhost, Highlander AFS, Academic Windows &
Tesla" link.
- Fill out all of the
information on the next screen and click on the "NEXT STEP"
button.
Note: this information has to be exactly the same as the
information in NJITs database. If it does not match,
you will receive an error message.
- Put a check in the
''Create? Yes" box for each account you would like to
create (figure 1) and click the "NEXT STEP" button.
To create a UCID account, select the "Directory and Mailhost"
option.
Note: if you already have a specific account created, you
will see Exists" in the "Status"
column.
- The next screen
requires that you enter and verify the password you would like to
use (figure 2). Once you have entered this information click on
the "NEXT STEP" button
- Before the account
is created, you must read and agree to abide by NJIT's
"Computer Use Policy" (figure 3). If you agree to the
policy, click the "AGREE to abide by this policy"
button.
- You will be
presented with a username, password, and confirmation number (used
only as proof that you went through the process). It is important
that you write this information down for future
reference.
NOTE: It takes 24 hours for the account process to be completed
and the account to become active.
Accessing WebCT Next Time
Next time you can follow the same process. you can go to the WebCT
home page and click on I am
currently taking a credit course or go directly to the logon
page
Reading the Class Discussions
Discussions are listed in the left-hand Menu and on the main page.
Once you click on Discussion you are brought to the Discussions page
where you will see several Discussions topics listed. You can
read the postings and/or create a new one. You can see all
messages within the topic or just the unread ones. See comments
below for proper etiquette.
More on WebCT Discussions
- Post: This will post the message as is. The
only checking done is that a subject is required.
- Preview: When you are creating a new message, you'll
have the option to look it over before it is posted. This will
show you the entire message which is useful if the message is
long. If you desire to make changes then you can click
'edit'.
- You can NOT edit or delete a posted message
- Attachments: Create a message as usual. Attachments are
added as on the pipeline. You browse to the file to be
attached and then click 'Attach File'. When done with the
message click 'Post'. Note: Please be
absolutely sure not to attach anything with a
virus...
- Clarity:
Always enter a SUBJECT line
when creating new messages!
- Civility: Everyone
can see these messages - proper language is
expected!
Seeing the New Discussion Messages
In the discussion area you can select to view unread messages by
clicking on "Show Unread"
