Believe it or not, taking a little time to read a bit of
history on the subject your learning makes it infinitely more
interesting. None of this is necessarily required to know for class or
any test, but it will surely flesh out your knowledge on the subject
(and maybe make you seem more intelligent than the average optics
student!).
- a quick intro to optics
- Spark Notes isn't just for your English and
literature classes; take a look at this short,
interesting summary of optical science. And, hey, give a
look around the Spark Notes physics section (I wish I
knew about this when I took the course).
- Some Ancient History
- Aristophanes, Democritus, Aristotle,
Archimedes---read about some of these early thinkers who
were among the first to ask, "What the #$% is light,
anyway?"
- Spectacles (Eye Glasses)
- Who was the first guy to say, "Man, I can't see anything anymore... What if I take this piece of glass and---hey! I can see."
- Optics Highlights
- Now that you've read the ancient history and the
story of spectacles, check out the rest that this
website has to offer.
- Wikipedia: History of Optics
- I don't which I love more: Wikipedia or Google. Here's a concise, comprehensive history of optics.
