Week One

Blackbody Radiation, the Sun, Incandescent lamps, Photoluminescence, florescent light, Solid state source, LEDs and lasers.

Week Two

Colors and spectral optics, the basics of color, the origin and characterization of light, light other than visible, The nature of light as an electromagnetic wave.

Lab: The spectra of a variety of light sources


Week Three

Light detectors and their characteristics; Resolution, Dynamic Range, S/N, Spectral Response.

Lab: Characterization of detector resolution and color perception


Week Four

Light detectors (II), the mechanism of a human eye.

Lab: The model and analysis of eye


Week Five

Light detectors (III), its mechanism; CCD/CMOS, Monochrome, Color (single chip, three chip), FPA, Bolometers, Radars.

Lab: The working mechanism of CCD/CMOS


Week Six

Image formation and imaging systems (I); Geometric optics: Emphasis is on the understanding of the object/image relationship; Wave optics: The emphasis is on diffraction effect, and its important role in optical imaging.

Lab: Infrared detector and UV detector


Week Seven

Image formation and imaging systems (II), parameters, Fundamental parameters of optical imaging systems: Resolution, field of view, field of depth, working distance.

Week Eight

Lecture: Image formation and imaging systems (II), quality; Image quality: Resolution, contrast, depth of field, perspective.

Lab: Analysis of imaging quality


Week Nine

Image formation and imaging systems (III), characterization; Modulation transfer function (MTF).

Lab: MTF and depth of field


Week Ten

Image formation and imaging systems (IV); Aberrations: Spherical, astigmatic; Distortion: axisymmetric, non-axisymmetric, Chromatic.

Lab: Analysis of chromatic aberration


Week Eleven

Image analysis and processing (I), Fourier optics; Fourier transformation, plane wave as superposition of spatial harmonic function, transfer function of free space; Convolution, cross correlation.

Lab: Line Edge Find


Week Twelve

Image analysis and processing (II), Processing of image by computer, digitization of image.

Lab: Blob analysis


Week Thirteen

Group projects on system design and characterization.
