Semester Project - P1: Brainstorming

Goal:

To apply the concepts and skills we're learning in class to a larger case.  

PLEASE review all Semester Project assignments BEFORE starting on any of them!  This will help prevent doing extra work later on!

Assignment

The semester's project will concern a mail order music and DVD system. Start by going on the Web and looking for online music CD/DVD sites just to get a flavor for what is done. We will be designing a system that is mail order not online order - a somewhat different set of operations. You'll be designing and implementing an information system for part of the mail order house. It can be an existing one or one you make up. Remember that an mail order house is a business, so in addition to the activities concerning the ordering of CD/DVD's, it also has regular organizational functions dealing with finances and personnel, etc.

You will work in groups from 3-4 people each.

This is a brainstorming week. Try to come up with a broad view of your project at this point. Later on we will decide what parts of it you will actually design and implement. So think very broadly at this point. We'll narrow down later.

Turn in a list of the following for your project (in a word document):

• the different departments in your organization
• who might be using your system (managers, other employees, customers/clients)
• the kinds of things they may want to know
  • what queries might they make
  • what kind of standard reports might managers want to receive
• possible transactions (things the information system should record)
• possible other things that might need to be logged
• possible data files, and some of the fields in each to support the above

Staple everything together. Put the name of everyone in your group on the front. Be sure to include your name.

Bring a printed copy to class and submit the electronic copy to WebCT
