ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF ME DEPARTMENT UNDER MY LEADERSHIP (7/2000-6/2005)

EDUCATION

More than doubled the size of the ME first time full-time freshmen class.
Created a new state-of-the-art CAD/CAE laboratory within the department and two new courses (one undergraduate and one graduate) on CAE.
Had the ME labs fully renovated (obtained $350,000 from State Funds): Renovations of the rooms, upgrade of existing experiments, building/purchase of new experiments, changed lab course supervisors, creation and installation of posters on walls for schematics of experiments.
New experiments: Water Tunnel experiment, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV), and Fluidized Bed experiment.
Fully reconstructed experiments: Centrifugal Pump experiment, Gear Pump experiment, Series/Parallel Pump experiment, Pelton Wheel experiment, Impact of a Jet experiment, Flow-Measuring Apparatus.
Completely renovated the ME engine laboratory with two new engine experiments recently purchased (obtained $150,000 from the university for the room renovation).
Obtained external funds and university support, and created a new Lab for nanotechnology with Dielectric Spectrometer, Atomic Force Microscope (AFM), Particle Counters, Near-Field Optical Microscope, Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). The lab is used for both research and teaching.
Created a new course on nanotechnology (using the latter lab) (cross-listed between ME and Materials Science, taught by ME).
Introduced flexibility in the ME undergraduate program to allow students to take courses outside of ME in one other specialty (e.g. biology), and be eligible for minor, second major or pre-med.
Increased success of ASME chapter which made twice ASME history by winning the first three prizes of ASME regional design competition (Region II) during the last five years.
Wrote the majority of the ABET report. Went successfully through the ABET 2000 review without any “concern, weakness or deficiency”; fully accredited for six years.
Improved the ME graduate program: Creation of ME department graduate student association, establishment of bi-weekly social hour for graduate students, creation of bi-weekly research presentations by Ph.D. students.
Initiated and instituted a departmental award ceremony luncheon after each university commencement ceremony with graduating students, their families and friends. Awards are given during lunch to students for their accomplishments (high GPA, excellence in one topic, best senior project, best research project, fast graduation, etc.).
