Text Information

O'Brien, James, A. Management Information Systems with Additional Cases for NJIT, Irwin/McGraw-Hill, 2004, ISBN 0-07-310674-7

Note: You can use old editions of the text from the last 3 years, if you copy the cases from someone else in the class. You can obtain used copies of the text from the NJIT bookstore, or from on-line bookstores. Note that some used versions come with supplemental materials such as Simnet and PowerWeb, which would be fine. Do not confuse these with O'Brien's undergraduate texts that are not called "Management Information Systems".

Grade Weights

During the first course session, the class will choose how to weight the three main performance criteria: individual performance, team performance and peer evaluation. Based on the discussion on WebBoard that completes this exercise, the professor will post the final grade weightings.

The weighting scheme serves several purposes:

Copying, Plagiarism, Cheating, and Other Unhappy Occurrences - The NJIT Honor Code

Unfortunately, we must address plagiarism or copying work that other people have written in homework, reports, articles or on the Web. If you are going to use more than a few words from someone or somewhere else you must put it in quotation marks and you must cite it (say where you found it). Generally there is nothing wrong with incorporating other people's ideas to a limited degree, but you must make it clear when you are using and building upon other people's ideas.

You may use material you find on the Web and other places, BUT:

- you must cite that work fully, i.e., provide a reference to ALL materials you use in the text of your report AT THE POSITION IN YOUR REPORT where you use it, even if you have rewritten this information

- do not copy unless it is important to include the original material unaltered (rewriting makes things especially clear to our audience)

- do not copy information directly without putting it in quotation marks

- don't quote long passages and do not include many quotes. Instead use your own words to explain/interpret what you find, and provide a reference to the source(s) of ALL materials you use in the text of your report at the position where you use it.

Any evidence of cheating in any form, including plagiarism, will be dealt with according to the honor code of NJIT (course failure and suspension or expulsion). Please note: There will be no warnings or chances with regard to cheating. Any discovered case of cheating will be immediately passed to the Dean of Students for further investigation. This unfortunately has happened to several students in the past in CIS677. This is your warning now. Cheating is not worth it - you may not only fail this course, but also be suspended from NJIT. The full text of the NJIT Honor Code is available for your review at http://www.njit.edu/academics/honorcode.php
