Steven Chien is a Professor and Director of Transportation Program with the John A. Reif, Jr. Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT). He holds a Ph.D. from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of Maryland at College Park. Before joining NJIT, he worked for China Engineering Consultants Inc. (Taipei, Taiwan), University of Maryland (College Park, MD), Federal Highway Administration (FHWA-TFHRC, McLean, VA), and Information Dynamics, Inc. (Washington, D.C.) on various transportation projects. He has been heavily involved in developing microscopic traffic simulators CORSIM for FHWA and conducted experiments in evaluating various ITS applications and transportation management strategies. Since 1996, he joined NJIT and supervised many research grants funded by public (e.g., USDOT, FHWA, and NJDOT) and private (e.g., Greyhound Lines, Inc.) sectors.

Dr. Chien's research activities and interests include: (1) travel time prediction in congested traffic networks, (2) mathematical and simulation modeling, (3) transportation system analysis, (4) intelligent transportation systems, (5)intermodal passenger transport, and (6) winter road maintenance planning and operation. Dr. Chien has been affiliating with various professional associations, including Sigma Xi, American Society of Civil Engineers, American Society for Engineering Education, Transportation Research Board, and Institute of Transportation Engineers.

Dr. Chien has authored and co-authored many articles published in refereed journals, conferences symposia proceedings, and project reports. He currently serves as an editorial board member of Designs, Journal of Enterprise Information Management and Journal of Traffic and Transportation Engineering, Associate Editor of Urban Rail Transit and Editor of the Journal of Advanced Transportation.
