Numerical Methods I
M614, Spring Semester 2005

Meets: Wednesday 11:30-12:55, Friday 10:00-11:25 Cullimore Hall Room II

Course Description:

This course will cover standard numerical methods, and the application of numerical techniques and analysis to some mathematical, physical, and biological systems described by ordinary differential equations. The primary focus will be on the analysis of various numerical methods, and this course will be continued to Numerical Methods II, which primarily focusses on more advanced numerical methods.

Specific topics to be covered include:

  • error sources, propagation and analysis
  • rootfinding, interpolation theory, approximation of functions
  • numerical integration and differentiation
  • numerical linear algebra and eigenvalue problems
  • application to system of ODE
  • application to system of PDE

We use Atkinson's textbook "An introduction to numerical analysis". These topics will be extended in Numerical Methods II.
