Access Information and Resources

All DMS computers running the UNIX operating system, with the exception of cams1.njit.edu and cams2.njit.edu, are not accessible from outside of the NJIT network. To access our common resources and your office UNIX/Linux computer you need to have a UCID & password, as well as a Highlander AFS account & password. To get an AFS account you must first have a UCID. If you're having AFS password problems this webpage should help you resolve them.

To log on any of our UNIX computers directly from outside of the NJIT network you need to have the NJIT VPN client installed and configured on the computer from which you are attempting this access. In case VPN is not available use one of the 36 AFS UNIX computers (ssh or ssh -X into afs1.njit.edu to afs36.njit.edu) as a jump-point to the DMS computer you're trying to access. NOTE: apparently, ssh for Silicon Graphics machines is different than the ssh we all know; read all about it here.

The computers cams1.njit.edu/cams2.njit.edu are accessible from outside of the NJIT network; use ssh or ssh -X to log on from home or elsewhere. NOTE: since these two computers are used solely for scientific computing there is no mail software installed; also, the installed netscape browser is very old and unstable. Our Beowulf cluster (hydra) is only accessible from the NJIT hard-wire network; access to hydra from the NJIT Wireless network, or from anywhere else outside of NJIT, requires VPN authentication.

If the operating system of the computer from which you are attempting DMS computer access is Linux or Mac OS X you should employ ssh -X to log on and run X11 applications remotely. If your operating system is Micro$oft Windoze, and you want to display X11 applications on your desktop, install and configure the X-Windows server.
