From Assimilation to Multiculturalism
From the 1880’s to the 1940’s when millions of immigrants arrived in the United
States, Assimilation was the accepted norm in our culture and society. Assimilation
can be defined as the process by which groups adapt or change to the dominant
culture. When the 1960’s brought with it the Civil Rights Movement, Cultural
Pluralism or Multiculturalism replaced assimilation. Multiculturalism is defined as a
state in which people of diverse ethnic, racial, religious, and social groups maintains
autonomous participation within a common civilization. In simpler terms it means a
kind of public education where the Anglo-American culture is not the only culture
encouraged, and cultural uniqueness is celebrated.
