Diversity Matters: Introduction

Learning Styles

There are 3 factors that influence students individual learning styles, the way in which students understand and comprehend information.

1. Cognitive factors- Students perceive, organize, and retain information differently. Some students perform better when they are given hands-on activities whereas other students are visual and prefer to look at and read the material.

2. Affective factors- Students learn at different motivational levels. For example, students from different socioeconomic groups are often raised with different values of education. Those from a middle income family often see education as a way to obtain a better standard of living whereas students from lower income homes may not see the importance of education since they may not have had any role models to stress the benefits of a good education.

3. Physiological factors- Students' physical condition affect how they learn. A student that is being abused at home will most likely not perform as well as one that is not. When studying, for instance, some students prefer absolute silence while others need to have a TV or radio playing.
